Shostakovich: Symphony No.10
Coming soon after our performance of the mischievous yet beautiful 2nd Piano Concerto in our December concert, we now meet a very different side of Shostakovich with his 10th Symphony. To quote the man himself: %u201CMusic is a means capable of expressing dark dramatism and pure rapture, suffering and ecstasy, fiery and cold fury, melancholy and wild merriment%u201D. All these elements and more are to be found in this fascinating work.
Contrasting this: two %u2018Hommages à Mozart%u2019, the charming wind quartet version of Mozart%u2019s Sinfonia Concertante, and Ibert%u2019s 200th birthday present from 1956, a short study in Mozartean vitality refracted through the prism of mid-20th century Parisian harmonies.
There will be a retiring collection in aid of Friends of Kampala Music School.
